Tongeren is a city in eastern Belgium. A modern building houses its Gallo-Roman Museum. Inside are displays from when the city was a major trading hub. In the main square is the 19th-century statue of Ambiorix, a local king who defeated the invading Romans in 54 B.C. The remains of the medieval walls surround the city center.
From the 15th to the 18th century, but especially in the 16th century, Oudenaarde was a world-known centre of tapestry production. The town's name, meaning “old field”, still lingers on in “outnal”, an obsolete English term for a kind of brown linen thread.
